I just brought my 87 GT home today with the new performance V6. I had my mechanic readjust all the rockers, and I still hear them tick a little louder than stock. Is this normal for a higher lift hydrolic cam? I can hear it get louder as the RPM's pick up. I can also hear it from inside the cab. It does not sound like lifers with no oil, just louder.

After building the engine in the 88GT, not to mention fixing the exhaust, I now can hear the fuel injectors at work. I don't remember how noisy the pintle injectors were, because I replaced mine with a set of Multec ball-type injectors. The Multec injectors have a distinct click sound. I pin-pointed the noise using a mechanics stethoscope.

Luck!

I always thought that the first sign of exhaust manifold leak sounds like valve tick.

I have a ticking sound between 1500 and 2000 RPM. Just when I'm accelerating at a normal pace. And it happens in every gear. Even in neutral, I think. I'm not sure what it is. It's been doing this ever since I got it about 6 months ago. 4 spd, by the way.

I am thinking more the injectors, since they did sit out of the car for a while. Plus they are the stock ones with 126K on them. I am going to drive over to the shop that built the motor and have them listen.

How can you test to see if it is the injectors or not?

I have the same thing. The ticking gets louder and faster with the RPMs. I too have 126k on the engine.

Dont forget about the valves...a lot of manuals have a misprint which causes valves to tick, i too have a ticking sound, but im elaving to the valves as it gets louder throughout the rpm's.

higher lift/duration cams with NEW rockers will make noise till they "seat" i just spoke with the dyno tuner then it will be about 1/2 as loud with 1500-2k miles on it...

I have a high lift, long duration cam in my 2.8 with stock injectors and about 100 miles on the rebuild. No clicks, ticks, taps or knocks- so far...

My exhaust manifold leak sounds just like ticking. Take a piece of hose or similar and use it as a stethascope around the mainfolds. If there is a leak, it will be really noticable through the hose.

The injectors do make some noise themselves. Also, the engine probably needs to break in still (?).
