Hey guys..

Just thought I'd share a solution I discoverd to get your lace black or whatever color Fiero wheels looking new again..

Get your wheels as dust free and clean as you can, let dry. (works best with wheels off car, but can be done with them on, if you're careful)

Pick up a spray can of "Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane" (Clear Gloss) got mine at Wally mart.

Spray entire wheel with a couple light coats, being sure to get in all the nooks and crannies. Let dry, put back on car.

Spray the plastic lug nut covers too, it brings them back also!

I waited to post this, because I wanted to see the long term affects. So far 6 months of warm, then cold weather and they still look nice!!

NOTE:
The Spar urethane is usually used on boats or other outdoor applications. Protects from sunlight, rain and temp changes..

Geez, give it time. It's not like you're Fiero Lisa.

Sounds like a good tip. Got any pics?

Have you had the wheels back off after you spayed them with the clear coat? I done this clear coat thing with some rims once and like to have never broke the lug nuts loose after I put them back on. Got my clear coat from Wally World too. I would hope the product is better now.

Sorry I'm very inpatient today!! (Damn.. why do people rspond to Fierolisa faster than me... I'm kinda sexy too ya know!!) HeHe

Butter, it's not quite your average clear coat, its a special outdoor finish. I first discovered it when the gel coat had faded on my boat.. couldn't revive it no matter what.
I sprayed it over the gel coat and it came back to original color!

If you use basic varnish, polyurethane, it looks kinda yellowy and cracks if left outside. This actually stays clear, is made for outdoor applications, AND somehow brings the color back from any faded paint..

As far as taking off wheels, I haven't yet. I did however, spray the plastic covers after they were on the nuts. I didn't spray over the lugnuts themselves.

Watch out you don't get the stuff all over your rotors. You have to be carefull even when putting armor all on your tires.Im sure have a few layers of clearcoat on the rotors would help any.

Yeah.. it would be best to remove wheels first... but I re-sprayed my wheels after they were back on, to get a couple spots I missed, and didn't notice any braking problems..

Also, don't get in too much of a hurry between coats of the spar varnish. It will spider and crack if you put on too thick of a coat at once.

If you take your time, do it right, you're wheels will look almost new!!

As I remember the clear coat I had was also an outdoor quality and it didn't yellow with age. But Damn when I went to change tires after many miles, I wound up twisting 2 fourway lug wrenches to the point of being useless and no 3/4 inch air wrench would touch it. Then Dad had an old military small fourway lug wrench he ask me to try before I headed out to my friends tire shop to put that big air gun they use for 18 wheelers on it. I twisted that small wrench about 3/4 turn but it got harder to turn as it twisted and finally the lugs started coming off. It kinda bothered me known' if I'd had a flat down the road I couldn't have changed it. I had painted rims before and had no trouble with the lugs but that clear coat I had then was something I thought could be used for "lock tight". It did enhance the paint and protected it well though.

YUP.. I would recommend removing wheels and then spraying... let dry, then mount.

Spray plastic covers after you screw them back on.. should keep from sticking

Before painting the lug covers, try cleaning them with Lysol "Basin Tub and Tile" or DOW Scrubbing Bubbles.... That stuff will remove all kinds of trash from plastic. Spray some one and let it work a bit. then scrub with soft Scotchbrite.

Even if you still spray them that will give you a clean base.
