I have a problem I hope you all can help with. I have an '87 SE 2.8 5 speed. For some reason it just started blowing the fuse for the radio/speedometer. I haven't changed anything in the electrical system since I got the car a few months ago with the exception of installing a new radio. The radio hasn't been turned on yet though because I need speakers. After my speedometer went out the first time I pulled the codes from the computer and got a code 24 Vehicle Speed Sensor. I did this before I checked the fuses because it was dark and I couldn't see them anyway. When it was light out I checked the fuses and found that the one for the radio/speedometer was blown. I replaced it and was fine for a few miles until it blew again. The only wiring diagrams I have are the ones in my Haynes manual which aren't the best to begin with. I checked the voltage from my alternator and it's good with and without a load. Does anyone know what might be causing the blown fuses or know what else to check? Thanks for the help

First of all welcome to the forum. I think you answered your own question. The radio install has something shorted out. It does not have to be on to cause a fuse to blow. Try unplugging the radio connector and check the power and grounds for the connector. The problem has to be there somewhere. Did you cut and splice the wires, or use one of the adapters for the conversion? If you spliced, are you sure you got the wires right?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm planning on disconnecting the radio today to see if maybe that's it. I don't think it is though because I've had it in the car for almost three months now with no problems. The day this first happened though I was driving around and hit a teeth jarring car swallowing pot hole. I hit it so hard I'm surprised I didn't blow a tire. A few hours later is when the first fuse blew. I was thinking that I hit it so hard maybe something in the electrical system was damaged or jarred loose. Aside from what I've checked already I don't know where else to look other than just checking things at random.

Yep....must agree....most likely the radio wiring. I guess the speedo works when fuse is good.
