OK, this is gonna be kinda long, so bare with me. Im looking at getting the fourspeed from (fastback87) in the mall. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how hard it would be to convert the 4spd to a 5spd. Im planning on doing an engine and tranny conversion. so i dont need a working tranny or an engine in the car. I want to know if i would have to do any more then put in the getrage FWD conversion kit and a new center counsel plate cover for the shifter. Anybody that knows what is involved in this swap please let me know.I really like the looks of this car and he says it has little if any rusting. and if it isnt too much work i think i would like to get this car. Please let me know

This won't be too hard to do.

First get the tranny you are going to use. If one from a Baretta, Grand Am, etc., get the brackets from Rodney Dickman(http://www.rodneydickman.com/index.html) to make it work in a Fiero. Or find a Getrag from a Fiero or use an Isuzu 5 speed (only need the cables for these). You will also need the shifter assembly. Get a new clutch and some wrenches (and some band-aids). The reverse lights might need a little "engineering" to make them work. The computer chip doesn't know there is a 5th gear, so it won't tell you to shift from 4th, but no big deal.

You will also need the shifter assembly?
what exactly does this entail and can i get them from any five speed FWD GM car or does it have to be fiero.

btw Im totally new to the mechanics of a manual transmission, so what part is the shifter assembly (dont mean to sound dumb I jsut want to make sure i know what your talking about)
ECM wont be an issue, i will have to get one out of another car anyway, Im doing a 3800 supercharge conversion with a five speed. so im trying to find a good clean frame and body in the best conditions and the cheapest price. (ie no engine, no interior, but if it has a five speed getrag the wahoo.) I have all the other stuff necessary, I just think it would be easier if i could get the car with all the hardware for the tranny in it if i can.

btw the slave cylinder is going out on the car that im looking at, how hard and expensive is that to fix? or lets start more basically, what is the slave cylinder?

The shifter assembly is everything inside the console, attached to the shift lever. Held in by a couple of (4 I believe) nuts. You will need a shifter and cables specific to the transmission (Isuzu or Gtrag) since the cables are slightly different. To my knowledge, a front wheel drive shifter will not work without mods because the cables go out the front of the shifter assembly, while the Fiero exits the rear of the shifter assembly.

The slave cylinder operates the clutch by accepting fluid displaced by the master cylinder when the clutch pedal is depressed. It is located at the driver's side front of the engine, under the air intake shorkle, and is bolted to the engine, shielded by a metal heat shield, and has a braided steel line entering from the bottom left end.
