A while back a friend who also owns a Fiero asked me if I removed the restriction from my air intake. I had no idea what he was talking about. He said that somewere in the intake system from where the intake vent is on the side to the throttle body is some sort of restriction that allows the air to pass through slowly, and that if you remove it you can get better air flow.
He has done this as far as I know to 2 V6 fieros, I have a 4 cyclinder and still have not been able yo find what he is talking about. I wanna know if this is a V6 specific thing, or if the 4 has it as well and where it is.

I have not been able to see this restrictor plate . how far up in the tube is it when you take the grill off? do you have to take the tube out to get to it?

Nope, take the outside grille off and take a screwdriver and stick it in the hole and tap it kinda hard. A sorta 1/2 round piece of plastic will break off. Just fish it out and you're all set.

This link provides some FALSE information.
"The only air that engine gets is a hole the size of a flat-blade screwdriver."
This statement is simply INCORRECT. The hole referred to is a water drain hole. If you take the air-box out and look closely, above the water-separator there is more surface area above it than the intake port.
Read the following, as I tend to agree there is no difference. The air-box with the water-separator appears restrictive, but isn't. http://www.fiero.org/text/firedup.txt
"In searching for more power, my race crew tested the Fiero V6 engine on the dyno without the stock air cleaner and inlet system, and we were surprised to find that this produced no change in power."
I think the best modification would be to have a servo controlled water-separator. That is, when the windshield wipers are on, a servo motor moves the water-separator into place. When the windshield wipers are off, the servo moves the water-separator out of the way for a more direct path for the air into the air-cleaner. This is a modification I am planning on doing in the future.

There isn't any restriction associated with the water seperator, BUT you will notice a louder intake roar. It sounds sweet when the window is down and you can hear the intake pulses at idle. It roars a bit at WFO. I have a Duke and couldn't imagine it with more motor.

Hey guys, this is all great info, but I mostly hear talk about the v6's intake, does the 4 cyclinder have a water separater as well, and if i remove it, will i be taking in water when it rains?

Yup, all Fiero's have the water separator in the fender. Instead of taking the brute force approach and breaking out the restriction, I just unbolted the box and removed it. You have to take the inner fender liner off, then you'll see it. It's real straight forward. I then got a long section of 3"dia. flexible intake tubing from Pep Boys. This is the type designed for air cleaners, etc. It hooks to the bottom of the factory air cleaner, and then runs out to the fender vent. I attached it to the fender vent with a short piece of 3" dia. PVC pipe. The flex hose clamps on one end of the PVC, and the flexible rubber piece inside the vent stretches tightly over the other. It works fine, and I have no problem with water getting in. Remember, your air cleaner will trap any water that makes it that far. If your filter isn't getting wet, you're fine.
No performance improvement whatsoever. At best a fraction of a horsepower, if that. But it does make the intake noise much louder. It sounds really good, so I did it for the sound more than anything else.

I found it. I took a hole cutter like you use to cut a hole in your house door to install a dead bolt and put it in my cordless drill and I had a nice 2-3/4 inch hole in seconds.
