Since I am doing some maintenance on an 84 Duke I have been pondering about a single drive belt.

Some observances and thoughts

On the 87 and 88 Dukes, there is a belt tensioner(sp) and they are DIS systems, were there is not a belt tensioner or DIS system on 84-86 Dukes. Up front, an 84-86 Duke would need a tension pully.

Additionally, the 84-86 Duke's alternator, waterpump, a/c', and crank shaft pullies are different, these would need to be replaced.

Furthermore, there are electrical connections at the altenator and the a/c. I am not certain, but I doubt that 87 and 88 alternators and a/c's use the same connectors as 84-86. Which means, at minimum, adapters may be needed at the alternator and a/c.

The 84-86 Duke crank shaft pulleys are etched for timing were 87 and 88 are not. Therefore, if a single drive belt is used for an 84-86 application, the crank shaft pulley would need a timing mark.

Finally, I am not aware of any special braces or brackets on the 87 and 88 Dukes for running the serpentine belt.

So this brings me to the big question, is it possible for the 84-86 Dukes be fitted to use the single drive belt system?

It could be done.... I don't know where you'd get the parts.

As you listed
You'd have to change all pulleys. WP is pressed, I think all 4 cyl use the same pump so you just need the pulley. Alt pulley likely could also be switched.
You'd have to find a crank pulley. More likely you'll need a new balancer.
You'd need a differant clutch for AC and likely differant compressor mounting hardware.
If the old style block won't accept the 87+ belt tensioner you'll need to work out something else.

It's probably allot more trouble than it's worth. Serpents aren't w/o their problems either.

You will also have to take into consideratin the direction of drive on the accessories. I.E.-the water pump. Some serpentine systems use a reverse rotation pump, etc. The later Dukes also (I'm pretty sure) have the W.P. housing cast into the block, unlike the earlier years bolt on housing. I'll have to agree with Ogre, probobly more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks guys for the info. If I had a little extra money, I would probably spend some time on this idea. I would really like to see if this would work. oh well, the budget dictates.
