So, I ordered a new set of dew strip from the Fiero Store; yes, I am now aware that www.gmpartsdirect.com has them for less. I Though, I hope this helps keep the Fiero Store open.

I remember reading in a GM owners manual, for god knows what car, that dew strip/weather strip care (the outer seal along the door windows) consisted of applying a thin layer of die-electric grease - something like, let is set for awhile, then wipe excess off and buff. That is, the die-electric grease will prevent the rubber strip from dry-rotting.

Additionally somewhere on the internet a fellow wrote that he cared for his seals using Castor oil. He made reference to its' use on mach speed jet seals.

The question is? What is the proper care of these strips.

Dielectric grease is a mix of silicone compounds. It's pretty resistant to being washed away by allot of things. Silicone treatments for rubber products are pretty common.

I wouldn't recomend organic oils of any type. Organic oils turn rancid with time, assuming they aren't washed off by the first soap/detergent/windex to get near them.

Rancid oil is more than just posibly developing a bad smell. The oil can actually changes into various tar like compounds that tend to hold dirt. These tars can be really nasty in both appearance and feel. They can be extremely hard to remove. Even some petrolium based products are known to do this. (It's still common the find the phrase "won't turn rancid" in many grease product descriptions.)

I'm not familliar with the highspeed seals you are refering to. I would suspect they get allot of maintenance besides the oil. Also, if they only keep applying fresh oil then the old oil keeps getting washed away before it can break down.

I've never had a owners manual before, but the 88 coupe bought last year had one. Well, I found the manual and...

From the Fiero Owners Manual

Weatherstrip Lubrication

Silicone grease application will lengthen weatherstrip life, help sealing and assist in elimination squeaks. At least every six months, all weatherstrips should be lubricated with a silicone-grease lubricant Part No. 1052863, or equivalent. A thin film of silicone grease should be applied using a clean cloth.
