What GM V6 engines will fit in a '84 Fireo other then the standard 2.8 V6 that comes in the '85-'89 models? I would like to drop a V6 in my '84 without doing any or very little cradle/chasis modifications. Also i would like to be able to add either a turbo or supercharger to that V6. Any suggestions??

Unless it is drop dead gorgeous I would just find a GT.
I was looking for a new motor for the 85 coupe and found a GT that was in about the same shape, it would have cost me twice as much to install a V6.
If you really want to go faster think about a V8. A friend at work put one in an 84 and it is fast.

I've had this car since '84 (my very first car). I loved it so much that i ran the hell out of it. It now has a 170K miles on it, plus the motor started to fall apart on it. So i pulled the engine and was going to rebuild it.....but this time with a lot more HP. The problem is i looked everywhere and can't find any performance parts for the 4 cylinder....only the V6. So i figure if i have to go the V6 route i might as well get one that i can use forced induction.

I don't mind going the V8 route so long as there's very little or no cradle/chasis modifications that have to be done.

I just replaced the V-6 cradle in my 85 SE (4-spd) with a cradle from a 84 SC. Other than drilling two holes for the engine shock absorber, there was no difference between the two. So.... any engine that will fit in a V-6 will fit in your 84. IE, 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, 3100, or 3400. If the 3.4 TDC and 3800 are direct bolt ups as far as the engine and transmission mounts go, they will also work.

Note: Supposidly, the SE's and SC (sport coupe's) had stronger cradles than the standard coupes.

PS. The photographer for your main squeeze must have been very, very short.

Look you already have a doner
Nice car.

As for the Fiero why not put a new 4 cylinder in it, a free flow cat and header combo and drive it for another 250000 miles.
If you have the need for speed just look around there are a lot of nice GTs around that wont break the bank.

My need for speed is cured by my "Main Squeeze" that puts out 500 HP (at the flywheel).

The main reason i want to "fix up" my Fiero is because i want to use it as my daily driver and quite frankly the 4 banger is lacking. I love my Fiero (minus the motor) so trading it in for a GT isn't going to happen. Which is why i'm trying to find out what options i have for motor replacement.

I read an article in PHTP about a guy who used a '98 3.8 V6 w/SC and a 4L65 tranny. The article mentioned that he did this with no chasis modification.....but didn't mention anything about the cradle. I'd love to go this route if i knew it would be an easy fitment.

try www.cwestco.com for all the info you need on the 3800Sc conversion. I did it to my car ( which was in HIgh Performance Pontiac Magagzine last month) and had to to do NO chassis mods at all. And the package is a great daily driver to complement you C-5. I get 35 mpg on the Highway and goes 13.2's all day long.

The "easiest" Fiero swap with a supercharged engine is a 3800 SC from a Pontiac or Buick mid to late 90s output 220-240 HP at 5200 rpm. The downside is the wiring. The 84 did not have the wiring in place for a V6, so some wiring modifications need to be done after the engine. The 3800 mounts on the the Fiero cradle with little modifications. This combination a Fiero with a 3800 SC produces a very fast car. Just get all the wiring, transmission and ECM from the donor car.

I agree with old Lar...
I have an Olds with a 3800 NA, computer and wiring that I am going to transplant after rebuilding the 3800...
I prefer the NA/tuned port injection over the SC for ease of swap...
And I am going to keep the mods mild, mild increase in compression ratio, mild increase in cam lift, mild increase in header flow, in other words, it sould be "STOCK", as everything was in stock when I bought it!!!

lildevil - You're the one i read about in Pontiac High Tech Performance mag. You got an AWESOME Fiero dude! When i seen that you ran a 13.2 in a Fiero V6 i was like "That's what i want mine to do". My C5 ran 13.3@108 bone stock (my 1st and only time to the track) and thought if i could get my Fiero to do that, or even the high 13's, it would be awesome. My Fiero is currently sitting with no engine and waiting for new life.

If you don't mind, i got a few questions for ya:

1) What was the total cost(parts only) for the engine/tranny?
2) Did you use the same tranny that the 3.8 V6 donor car came with?
3) Did the 3.8 V6 w/SC fit the craddle and engine bay without modding either?
4) Other then linkages, wiring, hoses, batt relocation, etc was there any thing that needed modified?
5) Was the wiring a REAL NIGHTMARE?

Thanks!
