According to haynes manual:

84: 9.754 in

85 and 86: 8.3996 in

87: 8.299 in

so im looking at this engine, but nobody knows what year it is. the pushrods are just under 9 inches long, does anybody know what year it is?

The engine will have the year printed either on top of the head below the valve cover or it will have it on the block behind the oil dip stick, another way to tell the year is, look into the holes where the lifters are, if there is metal brackets holding the lifters, its an 85 or 86. if it does not have the brackets its an 84, if the casting number is 10028058 then it is a 85 or 86.
