I have a 85 GT and it has a small crack about 1 inch long in a front fender. I've seen fenders that have been fixed but I don't know what was used on them. What's the best stuff I can use?

They make flexible body repair kit, has 2 tubes. Filler and catylist. just sand the area to rough it up, mix (usually 1/2& 1/2) and spread on both sides of crack (thats inside and outside of panel). They say dry in 30 mins, but I always let it set overnite before sanding it.

oh yeah...

Is the special putty fix just as good as the "welding"?

rogergarrison - - is a body man by trade. He speaks the truth!
Actually it depends on where the crack is. (at least to me)
If it's is a stress or flex prone area, in my opinion, just replace the panel.

dig a 'V' into the plastic along the crack, the repair kit to me is more reliable than the 'plastic welding' Shop next door does that, and Ive seen them crack right back before they even deliver the car. I wouldnt recommend any repair if its a stress or mounting point like indy said. Fenders are pretty cheap. Lisa had a cracked one and someone gave her one for free.
