Well was driving around a few nights ago. Was doing about 40mph down a dark street and managed to somewhat bottom out my 84se 4 speed . I hit a pothole about a foot deep! Car went *bang* and launched a few inches after leaving the big hole in the ground. Funny thing is the car felt fine after that. I pulled over to check everything out, I didn't see anything wrong! But I knew I had to have dont some damage.

Surely enough, about a minute from my house while driving home it happens. Im shifting into 2nd at about 5k rpm with my foot to the floor. When I drop the clutch into second, I hear a big thump. Now I have a lovely grinding noise with the car moving. I got the car home driving slowely like an old lady.

After jacking the car up and looking over it I seem to be missing a transmission mount. The left axel is touching the frame because the whole engine fell a few inchs. The grease CV boot got torn off and its a huge mess everywhere. I haven't really done much yet but look at the damage.

Now my question! If I just replace the mount and get a new boot will the car probably be "ok". How much grease is used in the CV boot? What kind? Any tips for geting in a new transmission mount? Where should I find a cheap new one? Would it be best to get a used one off someone from the forum?

Sorry about the huge post . This was probably the most teeth pounding thing thats happend to me in a fiero. Pretty minor compaired to things in other cars though .

fix the tranny mount.... that's not a big deal. Are you certain nothing damaged the tranny case or motor oil pan?

The CV is a pain in the ass.... You can use a split boot if you are very careful, very clean, and do exactly what the instructions say... even then it can be iffy.

Using a standard boot would be best. The inner boot is easier to fix than an outer.

And they use a special grease that is made specifically for them.... you can get that at most parts stores.

You'll also have to buy or borrow the tool for the boot clamps. They have to be done with the correct tools or they will not stay on. Some of those tools also require a breaker bar and a torque wrench. (I don't remember what clamp tool is used for Fiero right now.

The real question is.... did anything hit the axle shaft? is there even a smalle chance something hit the shaft? If you can't say for certain then replace the entire half shaft. Even a small bend in the shaft will likely cause really annoying vibration.

half shafts usually arent' that expecive... I just replace the damn things when they blow a boot or what ever. I think the last one I did was about $50 at Pep Boys and had a year warantee.

One note.... the replacement shafts don't always come with the ring around the outter CV... be carfull moving that from the old axle to the new one. And yes, you need it or the seal that runs on it won't seal. that seal provides additional protection for hte back of the hub bearing.
