I have an 84 SE and am really wanting a V6, my unlce has "connections" with people who own a junk yard and can get me most any engine really cheap. What i'm looking for are what all engine's with bolt up to the transmission (auto) and engine cradle w/o any or little modification. Would i need the computer from that V6 or any Fiero V6. Would i also need that wiring harness from that car? What all car's have the 2.8, 3.1, or any other engine that would bolt up to my tranny and cradle. I have a V6 cradle already. What all modifications would i have to do like radiator, Fuel pump, etc would be necessary for this converson also. I'm not sure what all car's/ engine he has in the junk yard, plus it's in missouri and i'm on OK, an 8 hour drive to where he is located from my house so i cannot look for myself. Would i also need different drive axle's or anything? Let me know what is the best/easiest/what all i would need from the other car to make this work, and what all i would need to do to my car to make this work! Thanks!!!

The easiest for you is to find a 2.8 Fiero engine for the swap. That said, I'd suspect any "junkyard engine" would need to be rebuilt, because of its age. A rebuild being a probable item, think about a 3.1L or a Camaro 3.4L replacing the 3.8. A newer and "better" engine.
The more challenging job is the wiring for the front half of the 84, which, when built, never had a V6 in mind. Not impossable to rewire, but challenging.
You would need a fuel pump for the v6, ECM and many other items, I can't think of. Expect a few grand in expenses for the unexpected.

How much rewiring would be involved? Would I have to rewire the entire car or is there another way? Like TONS of splicing in the engine compartment? And i'm not even sure on what engine's they have, but i was thinking that i could get a super good deal on most any engine since these people have been a friend of well my uncle since childhood and he's like 49. And they all know about me and stuff. But why would i need a few grand? If i get the engine cheap. I'm not going to be cutsomizing it, just a normal rebuild IF it needs it because they have some pretty new car's there. 95-plus, they even have a 99 350 from something but don't know what. LoL. But let me know, Thanks!!

www.kickhill.com will sell you all you need to do a V6 conversion. You could call and ask how much it would cost, to give you an idea, and what is involved.

The rewiring intails taking apart your center console/radio/dash. You need to redo all the wires from the ecm to your dash...what I"m doing is just taking all the wires from my 86SE parts car and swaping them with my 4cyl wires...
Then u must recalibrate your tach by simply saudering one resister on the board...

Off the top of my head, here are some things you will need for the engine swap:

1) The complete V6 engine (duh)
2) ECM, engine wiring harness, and all emissions sensors for the V6
3) Engine mounts and brackets for the V6
4) Fuel lines, fuel filter, and fuel pump for the V6
5) All the vacuum lines and hoses for the V6
6) The coolant hoses and crossover tube for the V6 (the ones in the engine compartment); the 4-banger and the V6 use the same radiator, so your existing one should be fine
7) Throttle cable for the V6
8) Air cleaner box and intake hoses for the V6
9) Exhaust system (from the manifolds to the catalytic converter) for the V6
10) probably some other parts I forgot to mention

Oh, and this is assuming you use a 2.8 liter V6 from another Fiero

I dont mean to be rude but unless you have already invested money (and/or blood, sweat and tears) into your '84 it might be easier to sell it and get a later model with the 2.8 already in it.

Thanks for all of the info, i'm not sure exactly what i'm going to do w/ my fiero. I'll probably buy another one eventaully w/ a V6...86/87 SE, 86 + GT or maybe a Formula, but i'm only 16 and don't make tons of money. I might just buy something else but keep my fiero. i was just looking for an engine swap that wouldn't be TOO difficult and TOO expensive especially if my unlce can get me a great deal on a V6. What about the camaro/firebird 2.8's? would those be a good swap? But thanks for the info!

[QUOTE]What about the camaro/firebird 2.8's? would those be a good swap?
Not really. Sure, it can be done. But you want to keep it simple. Those are longitudinal configurations vs transverse as in the Fiero. So, your intake would be reversed. That can be corrected but you still wouldn't have the exhaust and air intake parts that you would need.
Don't give up. Keep talking about it and you may come up with something.
Good luck, jp
