First off, Welcome to the Forum!!!!!!!!
The shifting problem may be the select cable adjustment. As these cars get older and the linkages wear, it seems to get more picky about how the select cable is adjusted. The select cable is the one that moves when the shifter is moved side to side. You might try making very small changes at the transmission end and see if it improves.
The idle may not really be a problem. It's not unusual for a cold engine to idle near 2000 rpm when it's first started. If it drops down to about 1000 rpm in around 15-30 seconds, then you may not have a problem. Usually high idle is caused by a vacuum leak, but usually engines with vacuum leaks will never idle down.
Have Fun and Welcome Again
