Ok, I finally gave up on my 86 6 cyl SE and picked up an 86 4 cyl automatic(no rust and 50 K miles!)The 6 cyl had engine problems, a clutch problem a rusted frame, changed brake lines and now the fuel pump quit working and I still need a clutch fork and who knows what else. Decided to not throw any more money at it due to rusted undercarridge and other assorted sundries included a Pa "salt treated" frame. Now I just bought an 86 4 cyl automatic Florida Fiero SE with NO rust, but it is a 4 cyl with an automatic. Runs, looks quite clean considering the age, and undercarrage is perfect(visually). I still have the 86 6 cyl 4 speed and may be able to, at some point do an engine/transmission changeout or at least use the 6 cyl hulk for parts for the "new" car.
My question is basically, other than the engine/transmission(and probably computer and rear engine to computer wiring harness) are most of the parts compatible (both are SE so the body is at least similar). Is the frame compatible with replacing the 4 with a V6 fiero engine/transmission combination if I can transfer the computer and the rear engine wiring, or is a total misfit. I picked up the 4 cyl for $2500 and it was going to cost me over half of that to just keep the 6 on the road till the next problem. Really, it is everything in the undercarrage not just a little bit. Good old winter in western Pa and the salt trucks. The 6 has over 200 k miles and the new 4 has a little over 50 K. It is to be my "winter back and forth to work car" to save my treasured 88 GT that has 24K on it and is a real treasure I do not wish to subject to Pa winter weather(and road salt crews). Am I just wasting my time even thinking about a future changeover and should I just content myself with a much nicer vehicle than a new piece of foreign junk even if just a bit sluggish compared to my 88 GT?
