Help - the "Dreaded Code 35" by Marc Harris

My 87 4-cyl. idles unsteady when cold but it idles and runs fine after about 1 minute. If it idles for more than 5-10 minutes, the ECM throws a code 35. I've cleaned out the IAC and replaced the PCV, crankcase breather, vapor canister element and a couple suspicious vacuum lines. No help.

The IAC gets extremelyhot, too hot to touch, when idling. Could this mean it's faulty? Also, the EGR valve looks original but the diaphram moves freely and it holds suction OK. Should I spin the wheel and replace these two parts? Anyone with a similar situation?

According to the Haynes manual, the only fix for the Code 35 is "replace IAC".

I reckon I would do just that before I tried to make any other "adjustments".

If you replace the IAC it is set to adjust itself once you reach 35mph. So don't be surprised if the car tries to die on you right after you swap it out.

And what do we have to do after it dies?
Im afraid I have to replace the IAC as well.

I meant die as in "to stall".

I thought it would be pretty easy to find an IAC from a salvage yard? I'm kind of a Duke Dunce , but I got a perfectly good IAC (for a V6) from a Chevy Eurosport) for my Fiero GT for less than $10. I realize the V6 IAC's probably aren't the same part, but they should be pretty common, in the US at least.
