Well here it goes again, another problem. Here's what happened now. I took the car out for alittle spin on some shopping sprees, no problem. On my final drive I took it out for a boot on the highway. Here's what happened!! Speedometer just died went to 0 but the car was still drivable. Seconds later the check engine light came on and stayed on. I turned around to go home before anymore problems. When I got off the hwy at the light's the car stalled out. It restarted but kept dieing at everystop after that till i got home. Code 24 was set. I also noticed some transmission fluid leak a table spoon full. This could be another problem not related since I just got the manual transmission fluid changed. I'm not sure if the guy new what he was doing, I think he overfilled it. What would happen if he did overfill it, would it leak out. Oh yes it is a 86gt 4spd. Thanks once again.

I'd start by checking the VSS (on top of the tranny) and make sure it's still hooked up. If you're daring, poke around a few sites and see the test for applying a low voltage 60hz AC signal to the VSS plug. You should get a 54 mph reading if everything's happy.

Sounds like the VSS died.

You can check the VSS by removing it from the transaxle, probing it with a analog volt meter set at the ~10v AC range.

While spinning the gear with your hands, you should get a voltage reading, usually about 4v AC. If you don't get any reading while spinning the gear, the VSS is probably dead.

Make sure you have the analog volt meter in the AC volts range.

Thanks for the reply. Now is the VSS the unit that you pull out to check for fluid level. If it is when I checked it the top of it where the connector goes was pretty wet with fluid. Hence my question on the original post what will happen if you overfill the manual tranny fluid, could this have caused the problem. The shop that filled my trany fluid didn't pull out this unit to check level they just used the filling hole until fluid was just about coming out. I only found this VSS to be the check level after talking to someone else who owns a fiero. Once again what will overfilling the trany fluid do.

It is possible the fluid being too full caused the problem but my guess is that the guy who pulled the VSS didn't know what he was doing exactly and the reason your speedo stopped is that he somehow loosened the gear on it and it came off and dropped into the tranny, thats not a good thing if it did.

If you go to pull the VSS do it slowly and carefully so if the gear is still attached or visible you can get it out.

Good luck.
