I have the rod knock problem I think. Knocking when you step on the gas, the higher the RPM, the louder the knock.
Anyway, is it really necessary to do an engine rebuild?
What if you replaced the crankshaft and the rodbearings, would that fix the problem?
And is it possible to remove the crankshaft without removing the engine?

Any help would be appreciated!

I doubt that you can do this job with out takeing the motor out of the car with any degree of success. also depending on the miles that the motor has on it you may want to consider replaceing with a rebuilt one altogether

The odometer says it has 230k, but it's really about 130k. Should I just get a new engine altogether?
Or maybe a new fiero??? I've seen on ebay, they ones with good mileage for under 5k.

Installing new rod bearings vs rebuilding vs installing new crate or rebuilt 2.8/2.9/3.1/3.4/3800 series/4.9/350/???? is argued constantly. How or what usually comes down to how much money, time, talent and patience an owner has.

Yes, bearings can be replaced without removing engine. No, engine cannot be rebuilt without removal.

Replacement of bearing can give, temporarily at least, quieter running. Will it last? Probably not!

Watch the forums, use the search function above, look in Ogre's cave and elsewhere and GOOD LUCK!

I guess the only option then is to rebuild the engine. I have the top half rebuilt, it's only the bottom that I need to rebuild.

Can someone give me an estimate on how much it would cost to rebuild the bottom engine?

I asked one guy he said $1100, and another guy wants 1500. Are those fair prices?

A crate rebuild 2.9L from Ed Parks Fiero Factory is about $1350. Add installation charges $600 to $800 or you install yourself (about $200). You rebuild a V6, about $300 to $500 depending on heads.

A good used (under 60K) 3.1L installed is about $1400 to $1600 complete job.

No flames, please. I'm doing all this for my "free" 85GT with a pesky little knock.

I would say that those prices are in line if they are going to r&r the motor seems like a good deal also if they know what they are doing
