I have an 86GT that I'm having a problem with the lights. When turned on, the lights go up and turn on, but won't retract when turned off. Any help is appreciated....Thanks!

Hey welcome. If you click on "search" and type in "head lights" a whole pile of info will come up for you. Best of luck.

Check the fuses.

On my '87 Mera, one fuse powers them up, while another powers them down.

I was about to get drastic in my trouble shooting before a friend following me one night said I had no tail lights. When I got home, I popped a fuse on for the tail lights and the headlights closed.

On each headlight motor, there is a blue-colored plug from the wiring. If that plug is disconnected, the lights will go up and turn on, but they won't go down. I'd check those first to make sure.

'86 and earlier models have the older style headlight motors. I don't think there are separate fuses. Check the blue wire. If it's connected, you'll probably need to rebuild the motor (might as well do both sides while you're at it). It's easy to rebuild the motors. Take it from a mechanically challenged guy who's done 4 so far. Check with Rodney Dickman or Doug Kinney. Both of them are top notch guys and both have kits to rebuild your lights at reasonable prices.

I do. On both the old (relay) and the new (electronic) headlight systems, the "down" signal is powered by the taillight fuse, as jdbaker mentioned. It's easy to check and see if the taillights aren't working. If the taillight fuse is blown, try a new fuse, but be prepared to track down the short circuit that caused it to blow in the first place.

In other words, if you asked me to work on your headlights, and the taillights were also out, I would definitely re-fuse .
