IN one of my cars, I have a short throw. When I shift into reverse, It begans to grind. I normally just turn the car off before going into reverse. Could the problem be the clutch pedal? If so can i just bend it back into position and weld some sort of reinforcement to prevent it from bending? Thanks for the input.

You'll definitely want to do a search on this subject.

I don't remember who it was that suggested putting it into one of the forward gears before reverse but it works!

You didn't say anything about which Fiero but I would say that it would either be an 85 or 86 4 speed.

If its not than the search will give you additional info.

Try going into third gear then into reverse. Seems to work for me!

*this is for my 85gt 4speed*

Most of the stick shifts I've driven grind into reverse. I think it must just be a common thing.

My '85 2M4 5spd was notorious for doing this. Until I put in a new clutch, which helped tremendously, I would throw it in first, then reverse, worked like a charm!
Man I miss that car!

theres no synchronizer in reverse, so if you do it too quickly, they all grind. Either put in gear slow, or syschronize it by putting into any other gear first to get reverse idler shaft moving.

went to the forum first, im hurt!! lol j/k
they are all basicly right here, as i see, but i cant really agree with the thought of it being "normal" to grind, as it really isnt normal, grinding kind of means "huston, we have a problem." the car wants to to hit the neutral center position (when you have it in neutral, let go and let it settle) as there is a safty on the trans. to keep you from hitting revers while driving down the road, and spining out into a ditch as your tranny sits in the road 100 ft away. it would be best to hit 3rd like mentioned proir, just to stop the chance of this happening. i say third because the shifter likes to sit there when not in use. we talked about this cars shifting problems, didnt we? IM me, and enlighten me on this. anyhow, the trany god seems to think reverse is the gear to make gring if there is any this abnormal with the shifting system. this goes back to the particals of crap in my 88'. like i said on that one, when the clutch was bleed, it didnt help. got a new clutch, that didnt help. stuck my finger in the clutch fluid, and we had grit and junk in the master. drained it, flushed it, filled it bleed it, drove it. no problem. you know me, cheep way first, try flushing it, i know you tried to bleed it. as long as this is the same fiero we were talking about before, this should fix all the problems at once. I still think it just needs to be flushed. let me know.

Myke, I'll get back to you as soon as I see you online. Thanks, I will try to flush it as soon as I get more fluid.

Throw it in second before you go in reverse, has worked for me for the last couple years when that started!

My 85SE v-6 4spd does this. I've just learned to ease it into reverse to let the rotating parts syncronize themselves.

Yep, mine does it sometimes, 4 spd. A friend's '79 mustang does the same thing. I've gotten the habit with the clutch in, putting it back in 1st or 2nd and then R.

Waa Hoo, No grindage!
