Has anyone out there done a straight engine swap uprgade? I have an 84 with 4 speed man. and was wondering how complicated this change would be.
Is a kit needed or is it pretty close to bolt in, and would I be able to use the original tranny?

Thanks

Call some of the Fiero Parts vendors/repair shops for an estimate. 84 more complex that later years because the 84 wiring harness was not created with a V6 in mind.

Assuming you are replacing a 4 with a 6 here is one in progress. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/011131.html
If you are going the other way round....why?

the easy way to go is to change the intake on the 2.8 to a carb, any early S-10 will work, you will also need the distibutor. You should at that point put a fuel pressure regulator in line to turn down the fuel pressure to about 4 PSI. when done you will have a very clean engine bay. I called the local junkyard and they wanted 150.00 for the intake and dist. Then bolt a small carb on it and you are done. The wiring is almost to simple to believe, you know starter, alt, oil pressure, water temp. just use your old sending units. You could do this in a weekend if you have a donar V6 Fiero and all the S-10 parts. Then you sell the intake, computer, throttle body,... and get your 150.00 back. cool Huh?

Thanks everyone!
Wantav8, do you know if any changes are required with the engine mounts, or if you can basically just drop the 2.8 in?
Will there be a loss of power when switching to a small carb (can a larger carb be used?)

You would get more Horsepower in the upper RPM's with a carb than you would with the stock intake. It will have a little less off the line but would make up for it in the upper RPM's. I would use a holly 400 and would expect it to be plenty big, the first really constraining item in this setup would be the S-10 intake. If you have the money go with an edelbrock and a holly 500. The 85+ V6 cradle has different mounting holes and engine mounts than the 84 Duke, you could put the holes in the cradle but you really need the V6 mounts and Dog bone.

Your job is much easier. You have to just change the fuel pump and pull the whole V6 harness and computer out of a donar car and put in your's, the C500 (connector by the battery) just plugs in and the connector by the computer under the center console just plugs in. I had a complete setup for a Fiero but couldn't get rid off it. It is just not economical to ship a cradle and engine when you can find Fiero's for 200.00 all day long here.

As I understand it the transaxle is good enough for the power of the v6, but wiring the 84 for the v6 is a pain.

I live in norfolk VA. last week ther was an 84 and a 85 for sale in the paper both were 200.00. in the last six months I have purchased two.
1 was 175.00 that was a 88 2m4 SE.
and 1 was an 86 2m6 SE

the 86 ran but needed a rear over the roof section

and the 88 needed a fuel pump.
Both had trashed interiors. I have taken them both to a friends junk yard after getting things like spoilers, sunroofs, misc body panels. I seem to see a lot of Fieros sitting in back yards. I could probably find one in less then a week if I look hard.
(of course it could be like a girlfriend- when you are not dating you can never find one, but when you are dating there all over you asking you out)

I have never seen a fast back, If I did I would own one.

I am sure my fellow VA guys can attest to what I am saying. I can get the phone numbers to the ones in the paper if anybody wants them.
Sorry this went off topic.
