I had my roof skin removed when I had my car painted and the "black tar" like ooze that is between the SMC skin and the metal frame was removed and tossed. Now I need to reapply this stuff before I put the roof back together. Can I get this stuff from an autoparts store or do I have to go to GM and spend probably more $$ than I want to on theirs??

If I go the GM route does anyone have the part # of this stuff or even know what it's called??

Thanks a ton to anyone who replys!!!!

How'd the repaint go? I guess we should be seeing you back on the road shortly- yes? As for the "Tar" stuff, I believe I've heard people suggest getting something like silicone sealer (preferably not a permanant one... you'll never remove the roof again if you do that!) Sorry I couldn't be more specific. When are you going to be back on the road?

I won't be able to drive it to this Sundays meet at Mall of America, but I will be able to bring a part of it to show the color.

I'm still waiting on the Driver's side fender in the mail (mine was cracked). I'll have to have that shot (aka painted), and I'm having a new windshield installed cuz I kinda shattered mine while removing the roof clip. I had to replace it anyways because there was a crack forming under the rear view mirror. I probably be driving it again maybe in 2 weeks or so... which will probably leave me only 3 weeks of driving time before it gets stored.

You might be looking for Butyl Rubber. It comes in a tube, like silicone. I believe it's easier to remove, though.
That's what I used to reseal the plastic trim on my T-top car. (The black plastic pieces that are between the glass and the rear clip.)

Jaei Sun- Is there a thread running about meeting at MOA this weekend that I'm missing now...? Also, do you have a driver's side fender? I can probably get one quick if you still need it!

Jaei Sun I'll ask the body shop what they use.

MinnGreenGT I think he meant Saturday, meeting at the MOA. Not sure if everyone knows what parking lot to meet at.

Far as I know it's the same adhesive used for mounting the windshield. You can get it fairly easy thru most parts stores.

Yes, you are looking for butyl rubber. It comes on a roll usually packaged in a flat square box. It is available in different sizes. It is commonly used to install windows...it's the same stuff that holds the rear window in the Fiero. It's available at any good auto parts store. Most modern cars use Urethane to hold the windshield in. That's the stuff that comes in a tube like caulk, It sets up firm so it would make future removal of the panel almost impossible without damage.

Butyl rubber on a roll?!
I wish I woulda known that.
The stuff that I bought was butyl rubber in a tube, and it was very thin. PITA to work with.
I hope Ronnie never has to remove those moldings, though.

Yeah, when I swapped in a sunroof on my 84 SE I used the butyl on a roll.
