Ok, I've started on my 85se project car. It has a 3800 series II V6 out of a 95 Camaro.

My first step is to take this jury rigged exhaust system off and make my baby legal. Now a while ago I read one user (had a green bauty if I remember) who just had a CAT to a y-pipe to the tips. That sounds GREAT. I'm all for the rumble. Any mufflerless ideas? Any downsides other than outrageous sound?

See you on the flipside.

Depending on what you want to spend, I have a sugestion...
Headers dumping into dual cats, then right out the rear...
If you keep both pipes side by side, and exit where they normally do, then it would look stock, but should rumble!

If you've got about 10" you can do what I did with my 3400. Collector inserts. Put them before the cat(unlike me catless).

Shown above without the tips on. Street legal and sound awesome!!!

I used to have the "cat - Y-pipe - resonator tip" exhaust.
I thought it sounded like kwrap.
It had a resonance at 2500-3000 RPM that would make your eyeballs vibrate. You couldn't carry on a conversation with the windows down. And it set off car alarms in the parking deck at work.
I had a glasspack welded in, between the cat and the Y. It sounded better, but still didn't sound like I wanted.
Best sounding system I've ever heard on a Fiero was an Ocelot behind a 3.4. Don't know about performance, though.

I too would have to warn against going with just cats and resonator tips. The cats are incapable of keeping a low resonance "thrum" when the engine is under load and it would kill someone with a hangover instantly if you subject them to that. I live at the top of a 2 mile slope and my ears would be ringing by the time I got home. At the very least a glass pack is needed for the low resonance. I learned my lesson when I tried to go mufflerless!

And I have heard true dual exhaust especially on a 3800 with cats and I will tell you that it does not sound as good as you would think. The uneven pulses from each side give a "pop" that sounds like a cylinder missing. It is a unique sound but not as authoritative as a combined exhaust going through a 2 1/2 inch pipe to a Flowmaster.

AgaricX... thanks for the compliment! First of all, check out this thread: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/013191.html
It was the original question about my exhaust.

As to address others. Yes, it is QUITE loud and often times droning. I too live at the top of a 2mile hill (from my office) and the volume is there- as for ringing ears... sometimes.

If you read the other thread, I am planning on installing a 2-stage exhaust system to give me the best of both worlds- at muffler and a straight pipe. Read the thread for specifics on my plans. (I just ordered the Cutout Pipe on Saturday)

As to whether or not is sounds like "kwrap" ... others have commented (read the other thread). Listen to it sometime... and make up your own mind. I know my GT certainly draws more attention at cruise night now that it rumbles like a V8 (was told that's what is sounded like at wisconsin dells this year)!

Anyway- I love it, but would love a muffler for the road trips and days with headaches!

One of the local guys here owned an '85GT with a cherrybomb in place of the cat, with rest of exhaust stock. Sounded pretty good, was pretty quiet still, but had a different tone. I liked it.
