You can wet-sand until you get through the clearcoat. To get through, wait until the water is the color of the paint. When you're sanding the clear, the color is a white-ish. However, if I'm not mistaken, shooting clear over base coat won't work. I don't think it grabs right. You could rough up the base coat, but then you see scratches through the clear. Then you see them forever. I'd say a repaint is a good idea.

I'm not sure it would take either, but it might be worth a try as opposed to paying for a complete repaint.

Get yourself some very fine wet sand paper. Something like 1000 grit. Its going to take a long time to sand thru the clear with this, but you definately don't want to take away much of the base coat. Once you've sanded off all the paint that has the rash, be sure everything looks smooth. The buff any light scratches out of the base coat and any remaining clear. Wash it off VERY well with soapy water to be sure no risidual buffing compound is left and carefully re-spray with clear. To really get it to shine, you may have to re-sand the clear coat lightly to smooth it out and buff again.

I wouldn't just leave the clear off. Base/Clear coat paints are designed to have both... the base will look dull compaired to other panels with the clear coat on it. IT may not hold up well either.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

I have seen spray cans of clear coat remover at Autozone. It is only supposed to take off the clear coat. You would have to tape off everything that you did not want to remove. It might save you some time from all that sanding.

I have never heard of clear coat remover. I figure if it takes off clear its going to take off the base too, the base is actually weaker than the clear, so anything that is going to damage the clear is going to take off the base too. I had the same problem with my car and heres what I did. wet sand the areas with 320 grit sand paper until it feels smooth to the touch. Spray about 4 coats of primer surfacer over the area you just sanded, and let it dry for a few days. wet sand the area again (400 grit) until its perfectly smooth. Then respray the entire panel with base and clear. The primer will act as a filler if there is any pits in the substrate. good luck.

I have my own body shop and Ive seen the clearcoat remover, but never have tried it. Personaly, I cant see how it could work. It has to affect the basecoat. I wouldnt just reclear it. You need at least a lite coat of base and then the clear. You should primer the panel too, to make sure that the edges where you feathered it dont swell up and show thru the finished job.
