I'm adding a hood vent over the radiator and have it all fitted up and ready to install.
I know the hood is SMC material, what is the best stuff to use that will bond well to the hood and finish properly?
I searched the archives on panel repair etc, most threads suggested just to replace the affected panels. Not much else, tho.
Can I just use a fiberglass repair kit and polyester filler?
Also, any tips on procedures?

Fiberglass and bondo are fine.

Someone else had suggested this material (see photo)- something they've found at a local store. I wouldn't recommend regular Bondo though, I understand that it's too rigid for the SMC and can show more cracks over time. Look for a filler for suggest fiberglass use- if possible the SMC specific type.

I've used Evercoat SMC adhesive/filler with very good results. 3M also makes SMC specific adhesives. If you are going to use fiberglass resin, be sure it is epoxy resin and not polyester resin. Polyester resin does not bond as well with SMC.

I use Evercoat Resin and Panel Adhesive for scoops on SMC hoods and decklids.

Whatever you do..DO NOT APPLY FIBERGLASS RESIN TO A SMC PANEL...It will adhere temporarily but not for long. Within a year it will start popping off. I am a body man by trade and repair alot of SMC panels.I would'nt use body filler for bonding either. The best thing to use is a product called LORD Fusor 120 It is a two part epoxy for bonding and repairing SMC.The company SEM also makes something similar. You can usually find one of the two at your local automotive paint supply store. If you have any more ?'s just ask.

WARDOG85T: Do you have an address or telephone number or local supplier where this product can be ordered?

Sure but its a little far away for you. The store is located in a town called Clinton here in N.C.. The name of the store is called Barnes Motor Parts and Napa dealer. The product should be offered nationwide through auto body supply stores. It is very effective and reliable.
