hey all, my air filter unit, is rusty....any idea's to get most of this rust off?, or can i just paint over it?..if so, can i use regular spray paint?, or do i have to get the spray paint that can hold high high temps?...because of the engine stuff...thanks in advance

Engine paint from an auto store should do fine and is not that expensive. It is good for temps as high as 500F.

Sandblasting for the rust and old paint if any, carbspray for degreasing the stuff.
If you can't get to a sandblaster, a wire brush works pretty well too.

like tina says-sandblast is best, but you can sand it too. I think the 'crinkle' finish paint looks great on parts like that. The texture covers up surface rust and looks a little custom. Comes in a single spray can at better auto parts stores.

Get some EXTEND or NAVEL JELLY made by locktite at the hardware store for the rust. both are good but I like the extend better. It really works great.

If you're going to paint over the rust, this product I think called POR15 will do the trick. Wash the loose rust off and paint over it. The rust actually helps the paint to bond.
