Hi, it's me again. I went out to start up my 84' SE (4 cyl.) today, and when I did, i noticed some smoke coming from the engine compartment. It's not from the crankcase through the breather filter (I fixed that), it seems to be coming from the alternator region of the engine, maybe below the alternator, in that area. What could be causing this? I don't think it's the belt, it only squeals a little at startup. The car runs fine once it's warmed up, it idles a little high at about 1100-1150 rpm, but other than that it runs normally. What gives?
Thanks.

How many miles? You are probably leaking a little through old gaskets. Is it leaking on the manifold?

Ok, scratch the location of the smoke, the sun was playing tricks on me again. The smoke seems to be coming from the intake manifold area, but not from the air cleaner. Could it be from the EGR? Or a bad intake manifold gasket? I've ruled out valve cover gasket, I replaced it and it's not leaking.
The car has 103000 miles on it.
Thanks for your help.

First, never post a subject like"Smoke in the engine room". It makes everyone think another 84 has caught afire.(and gives old Navy men flashbacks)Just kiddin of course. Is it a lot of smoke? What color? Does it smell electrical, oil, or like antifreeze?
You say you changed the valve cover gasket, if it was leaking,is the lifter cover(under the intake manifold) leaking? There is also a heater hose connection on the right side of the engine that is hard to get to that can get a little pin hole and spray a fine mist on hot engine parts, making a kind of sweet smelling smke. sorry for all the questions and not many answers. Just tryin to get an idea where the problem lies.

I know about the fire thing, the first time I saw smoke coming out from the decklid vents I was prepared for the worst! I can't really remember what it smelled like. I'll have to go out tomorrow and reinspect it and post what I find tomorrow.
Thanks!
