When I had my '87 coupe converted to a V6, I retained the Isuzu 5-speed tranny. Now, I'm beginning to research the idea of adding a turbocharger. Unfortunately, I've run into a problem.

For those familiar with the Isuzu tranny, you'll recall that the shift and select cables for it come out the top, and loop up over the air intake system of the 4-banger (even worse, on my V6, they rest against the throttle body).

Anyway, my problem is that all turbo systems I've seen for the V6 have the turbocharger occupying the space right above the tranny bell housing (where my cables are).

Has anyone located a system that works with the Isuzu?

Any help/information on this subject is greatly appreciated.

TIA

Looks like it is Getrag time. Actually, I'm quite interested in finding out this information also.

I think you'd be better off going to a getrag even if it could be mounted with the isuzu. I don't think that tranny will last very long with a turbo 3.4 attached to it.

I thought I read here that the Isuzu was good to around 300 ponies ... was I dreaming?

Sound like a good question for Archie? He might have some tricks for routing the Isuzu shift cables around a V8 installation, which might be applicable to your situation. Just a thought...

Find a way. Don't ever go with a getrag. I have both on my 88's. I don't like the feel or gearing of the getrag. The Isuzu is plenty strong. I beat on mine and Archie only uses them on his V8 conversions. The Isuzu car can pull circles around the getrag one.

Okay, for the record, my Isuzu can indeed run circles around my Getrag. And, my Getrag can run circles around the Isuzu, too. See, you go to a big parking lot, park one car, get into the other and drive around the first one...

What about an hydraulic linkage? You guys probably think it's a dumb idea (you are usually pretty perceptive), but I think I've seen hydraulic throttle kits used on hot rods before. The forces we're talking about for a shifter are really pretty small (versus what the clutch & brakes see), unless you use you feet on the shifter.

Yeah, you'd have to solve the push-pull thing (with return spring(s) or more hydraulics or whatever), but it'd sure be flexible. And think how much fun you could have bleeding it all! Kind of a half-baked idea, but food for thought, maybe.

Scott,

You have more of a problem with the turbo than a tranny. Her name is Lisa. get the kitten and she might let you do it. LOL
