Ok Guys,

I got a 87 GT with a almost totally rebuilt motor about 1000 miles ago, this is at least the second time that i know of that the engines been completly out of it (both times due to knock). But now it vibrates like theres no tommarow, as long as my foots on the gas its fine, but as soon as i let off or get on the brakes it startes up, Any Ideas??

Hey, welcome to the club.

To me, that sounds like one or more of your mounts are bad. Have you replaced the mounts since you've had the car? Or at least had them checked? Because those are the same symptoms I have. I need to have my front motor mount replaced. (all others have been withing the last month, that's just on back order or it would have been done too)

Since we had to pull the whole cradle i had everything in that car checked, and the mechanic said all the mounts looked great (I know they did a good job cause it was at my dads dealership). He said it might be the shock that connects to the passanger side of the engine, He told me to take it off and drive around a few days without it and see how it was, would this make a difference?? sounds kindof wacky to me.

It is in the tranny. www.fierostore.com sells "Axle stabalizer bearings", they replace the main seals to get rid of vibrations. Even thought the axle's may be balanced, they may still wobble a little. They run about $80, and it made my vibrations go away. My car was fine as long as you were on the gas, but the minute you let off it would shake like no tomorrow. In my opinion I do not think it is th emounts. I just replaced mine and they were really bad (one was in pieces), but it did not cause vibrations (just a nice slamming in the engine compartment).

That's interesting...
Did you put them in yourself? Or did you have them installed? And how hard or how much was it to install?

Had them put in for less than $100 by my mechanic in WI, and then had him put a set in on a 4:10 tranny swap I did on another car. I am going to try a set on my own soon to see how hard it is to do on my 87 GT. I would reccomend them on all fiero's. I get lots of work done at a good price at my mechanis in WI. I had a 4:10 put in (I supplied the tranny), new clutch, 4 exhaust manifold bolts drilled out, and the stabalizer bearings, and flywheel resurfacing all for $834.00.

If you were asking about the motor mounts, Oreif helped me put them in, and it only ran me $34.00 for all three mounts (auto tranny).

I dont really think its in the wheel bearings or anything cause its got a rough idle to it to, but as soon as you pop it into gear its fine, and it dosnt really shake if your decelerating from only like 40 mph, if your going any faster you feel like you got a vibrating chair.

Sounds like it could be a mis-match of balance parts to me. What parts were replaced on the last rebuild.

Fiero-24 your thoughts broke up in your second post... Did you say the mechanic removed them from the first trans and re-installed them in another? The reason I'm asking is that my current trans needs them but I want to change it later on.

TIA

Sorry about that 87GTZ34, I was trying to keep the message simpe and not ramble on. I had the stabalizer bearings put on an 86 Sport Coupe, and then when I bought an 85 SE with a blow tranny, I had them added to that as well. I did not reuse the ones from the SC. Sorry I could not be more help hyhy4u, if I run across anyhting you will be the first to know.

I am almost positive it has the incorrect flywheel, Been there. I had what I thought to be an 86 motor and it was an 88 motor with an 86 flywheel. It shook like hell. I drove 8,000 miles like that until I figured it out.

Let me know how you make out.
