I went to Autozone to buy a harmonic balancer for my new 87 GT auto and there were two options to choose from. The "knowledgable Autozone counter person" could not tell me the difference between the two and said that I needed to know the OEM number off the one in my car. I was wondering if maybe they are different for an automatic or stick? or how I can find the OEM number for the harmonic balancer for my year car.

Thanks in advance guys

No - what came up on his WITTDTJR screen ( I used to be an assistant sales manager at Vato-zone )was 2 balancers - both the same, one without timing marks for the 3.4 and one with for the stock 2.8 - just get the one with marks

Arghh! ...well i went back to "Vato-Zone" (appropriately named if you live in Oxnard) and told him that I wanted the one for the 2.8 with the timing marks. He told me that he doesn't know anything about that and I'll have to take the balancer off my car and get the number off it for him. Since this is my main mode of transportation I'm sure you can all guess what the likelyhood of that happening is. I looked on the GM performance parts website but could not find the balancer and I doubt it will get here quick enough anyway. Oh I wanted to ask also how bad is it to drive around with a bad harmonic balancer? I just bought this car and it had a rebuild done 10k miles ago, I was reading through the reciepts and the mechanic who did the work said the balancer was bad and should be replaced. Why he didn't do it at the time is beyond me, maybe he couldn't get the part or something. Anyway the motor vibrates like a V8 at idle and sometimes looks like the wing might go flying of at any second. This may be due in part to bad motor mounts I think (the dogbone was pretty tore up so I replaced with the poly dogbone off my other GT) and I haven't been able to inspect the others yet, but I think it probably has to do a lot with the balancer too.

Anyway does anyone have a harmonic balancer laying around off an 87 GT Automatic and could possibly grab me the OEM number off it? I'm going to try Kragen now but I'm pretty sure they'll ask me the same question. I would just go buy the ****er from the GM parts dept but the bastards are only open Mon-Fri during normal business hours. Right when I'm at work :\

I ordered mine Sunday and Got it Monday. Go into the GM website and click on catalog. Then click Chevy 60-degree v6. Then click Dampers, bolts, and flywheels. The part number is 14085401 and the price is $46 from Dobles Chevrolet.

You need to sign in and choose a dealership from the list to get the prices and order. You can't beat a GM damper. Unless the damper itself is way out of balance your not going to feel the effects of a bad damper. It doesn't make the engine shake or the car shake. A bad damper however can brake a crankshaft, wear bearings, wear valve train, and the list goes on.

Here is a copy from the GM website.

All V6/60º Chevrolets use a neutral balanced torsional damper. This damper is used on V6/60º engines installed in Camaros and S-10 trucks.

Thanks 88 Formula It's on it's way. So then do you think my vibrating problem is probably motor mounts?
