I have just re built my 2.8 in my 87 GT it is a stock rebuild but before I put it back I want to bypass the computer.

I know I need to go to a carb but I cant find an aftermarket aluminum intake. I also need to go with a vacuum advanced distributor will one from a pre 87 2.8 work?? The other thing I want to do is go with a little bit better cam, any suggestions?? It is going to be a daily driver so I didn't over build the motor.

Thanks,
Rob

I went to a carb on mine, I can tell you whatever you want to know. If you search my nickname, I've talked about this a bunch of times. I used a Sealed Power "Speed-Pro" cam, number CS-192R. It's about as radical as I could find, carb profile, fairly lopey idle, but sufficient vacuum to run all accessories. A little weak under 2,000 RPM, but absolutely comes alive at around 2,200. I can do rolling burnouts with this cam and carb. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. taijiguy@hotmail.com ~Taiji

Click on the link and scroll about 2/3's of the way down. This will give you all the part info you need that Taijiguy used. For actual procedure Email him.

Thanks for the info, I can get the intake and carb from Performance Automotive Warehouse, I'll check on the cam later to day.

Taijiguy,

Do you have a diagram on how I need to do the fuel pump wiring and a bypass fuel regulator??

What year is your engine, I can find all kinds of aftermarket parts for 85 and older 2.8 engines but no one can tell me if the parts will work on 87 and newer 2.8's.

Will the same manifold and distributor work on 87's as well as 85 and older engines??

An older 2.8 Chev Citation distributor should work,is an HEI also.Used to have one,but gave it away. You might just be able to get one rebuilt, and pay the core charge.

You need a US S-10 HEI/vac advance dist, not a US Citation. An earlier Canadian is vac too but not US.

Keep in mind that the after market manifolds for the 660 are for longitudinal engines, not transverse although it will fit.

Why go to a carb? The MPFI works so much better.

I'm wanting to bypass the computer and make the engine easier for me to work on and keep up, repair shops charge too much.

There was one thing I forgot about. You'll need to rework the water inlet for the thermostat housing to accomodate the new manifold.
I just cut mine right above the mounting flange, and the ground the remains from the flange opening, and reinserted the housing back into the flange with the orientation corrected, and welded it up. I also cut off, and welded the two small outlets that fed the throttle body. Or, if you prefer, Jeg's sells a billet aluminum housing, but I don't know what thermostat it would use.
Personally, I like the carb set up a whole lot more then the F/I, and in fact, with my cam, it runs a bunch better than with the injection. And it is a damn sight easier to tend to! Oh, and I used a distributor from an early 80's Blazer 2.8- perfect fit.
