Recently, I was having problems starting the engine. I thought it was the +-wire going to the solenoid that was too corroded (it really looked like that). When I started nscrewing it, the plastic piece broke. That was probably the primary source of the problem I was looking for. I re-did the end of the wire
anyway, but now what with that plastic thing? Change the whole starter? Can I only change the solenoid? Or even better, only the plastic-screw-holder? I think I saw some screws to remove that holder. So far, I attached it temporarly; but sometimes I need a third hand to start I didn't have a hose clamp, 'cause that would hold that thing a bit better.

Any starter pro?

Thanks in advance

I agree. you will need a new starter soliniod, but if the starter is fairly old you may want to put new brushes in it when you have it out.

If the solinoid is bad then pull the starter down and have a look at the thing to see what kind of shape it's in.

Unless the starter motor is in good shape I'd replace the whole unit and be done with it. GM starters don't cost very much in the scheme of things. Don't forget to get some shims. The replacement starter may need them. (May need more or less shim than the one that is on it now.)

If you don't have a heai shield on the starter, make or buy one. The starter will last longer. Someone listed a part number for a GM one thru a dealer. I think it's in the archives. It wasn't very expesnsive as I remember....
