If you spin it up (release the clutch with the trans in neutral), then depress the clutch and real quick shift into reverse, it'll grind (almost) everytime.

If you figure out that you've been doing it that way from time to time, change your habits - shift into 2nd (or, any gear besides reverse) then shift into reverse. That'll stop the trans from spinning while you're trying to put it in reverse.

Sorry if you already knew this

Reverse is a "non syncro" gear. If the car is moving, or the clutch hasn't spun down, it will likely grind.

after that first step is always to check linkage condition and adjustment.

Have you change the clutch pedal. The arm may be bent. 84-86 came with alumimun clutch arms. It may need to be replaced with a steel one. This would be a clutch disengement problem, not a tranny problem.

Ogre is, of course, right.

I have an 85 GT as well and if I try to put it into reverse too quickly before the clutch has spun down, it will ALWAYS grind.

Just another one of those annoying facts of life...

Now I don't remember since its been forever since I had a 5 gear tranny, but I don't remember them grinding in Reverse. Did the Isuzu and Getrag have a reverse synchro?

I agree, mines a 4 spd, and every 4 spd Ive driven grinds if you put it in reverse very quick, I just push clutch in and slowly pull it in gear.
