My car has recently been showing code 34. I know it has something to do with the MAP sensor. Does that mean I need a new one? I checked all the little hoses, and they're connected. What to do?

The code 34 is set when the closed throttle speed is 50 RPM above or below the correct idle speed for 30 seconds. The book says to check for vacuume leaks. Also suggests to change the IAC senser (Idle Air Control). Not sure if the V6 has one of those, think the v6 has the Mass air flow sensor, so the IAC is only on the 4 cyl. My 84 coupe had the same problem, changed the IAC sensor (which is connected to the TBI unit) and the code went away. Just a thought.

Yup, the V6 also uses a MAP and MAT sensor instead of Mass Airflow. :/

Whenever I got my car, It's had this throttle "problem"
When I start the car, the RPMs are about 2000. But when I give it a little gas, it goes back down to normal. This doesn't happen all the time, but most of the time. Always on a "cold" start and sometimes after I've been driving for a while.

I have the same problem, sticking throttle plate...
If I blip the pedal, the rpms go to normal, but sticks on opening...
crash...

ya...code 34 is map sensor code. most likely it needs a map sensor. sometimes it might be wireing, but since the computer got the code to display, the wireing is probably ok, since the code is for low voltage or high vac. just blow a sensor in it, clear the codes and see if it comes back, if it does, then on to plan B!!

I got the same code when I ran the codes on my '84 SE. I replaced the MAP sensor but it still didn't idle exactly right, replaced all of the vaccuum hoses and it almost idles normally. I have to replace the IAC now, it's still not idling right. Just make sure you check all the vaccuum hoses by using WD-40 (thanks for the tip, Wade). Hose is $.50/ft. at autozone, a lot cheaper than the $27 MAP sensor.
