My 2.5L is also making a tapping noise but mine is doing it all the time.It is even doing it at idle.Should i get my car to a mechanic? Would it be safe to drive the car?

An engine tap could be one of many things. Where do you think the tapping is coming from? could be bearings, rods, rockers, valves, who knows. use a rolled up piece of paper or a hose as a stethoscope to try and find out exactly where the tap comes from.

Depends on the tap.
But if you don't look into it, it could turn into a death knock...
But again, it would give you a reason to put in that V6 or V8 you always wanted!

The cam/timing gears also get noisy. I had mine replaced years ago when I had the four cylinder recall done.

I asked why they were noisy. They get noisy because they wear as they are some kind of synthetic material. I asked why didn't Pontiac use metal to reduce wear, and the mechanic responded because they were noisy!
