steering wheel problems by varnster

I just replaced my ignition switch and got
turn signal and hazard switch reconnected,
my problem is the spring that is on the steering shaft(that the wheel bolts to)HAS
SPRUNG. and I cant get the black cover back
on I can push it in but the spring pressure is so great their is no way I can put the little snap ring on while pushing in on the black cover.when I first took of the black
cover their was no spring pressure, this makes me think im doing something wrong I
cant find any info on this, PLEASE HELP A

Assembly order.... Spring, metal plate, snap ring, plastic cover. You likely need the tool to get the ring back on as well as off. I usually do.

I think the tool you are looking for is called a lock plate depressor. Should be availabel at any auto parts store. Often you can borrow one by leaving a deposit until it is returned. AutoZone does this.
