I've gone to the local Lowes and Home Depot and gotten the largest rivits that they carry and they are still not large enough? I know I can put washers on both sides of some...but there are a few places that I can't do that? Where can I get larger rivits...and where can I get the larger rivit gun? Are there any other solutions to rivits? Thanks

You can get the riveter for Harbor Frieght for about 18 dollars. Comes with wrench, 4 different nose pieces and 25 each, 1/8,3/16,3/32 and 1/4 inch rivets.
Model # 41291. They have an on line catalog.

Depends on where you're trying to rivet.

  • The rocker panels can be reattached on the bottom edge with black nylon 1/4" license plate bolts or any 1/4"x1" bolt or 10mm x 25mm bolt.
  • The top of the rocker panel can be attached to the door sill with 1/4" black plastic push rivets (see Motormite Rivet-Tite section at your local auto parts store).
  • One hole in the lower corner of the front fender can also be through-bolted.
  • To attach the lower quarter to the frame, I think you will have to use 1/4" aluminum rivets.
  • Likewise, to attach the lower quarter to the upper rear fender, use 1/4" plastic GM rivets.

Both aluminum and plastic 1/4" rivets were still available from GM a few months ago. You do need a 1/4" rivet gun.

Good luck!

Thanks alot guys....especially you Wolfhound. We just had a harbor freight store open a few weeks ago. I've already spent over $1000 dollars there. Bought a rivet gun but the one you said was hiding on a top shelf. I got the rivets from the parts store...they are a little harder to do than the gun...but they are alot cheaper. Ok.. I know there is some left over rivet material that dropped in that channel that the top rocker rivets go into. My only other question is how can I get that out?

Also...I thought of using nut rivets....to where you could just have screws that attach everything. Do you think that would work? Or would it not be strong enough?

When I took all the body panels off of my 84, I used screws in place of all the rivits. For the areas that are "blind" (like the door sills), I used aircraft nutplates that I surface riveted with 3/32 pop rivets. Made putting it together super easy and if I have need to remove a panel I just get out the pnuematic screw gun and have a ball
