Hi

I've been having a problem that when I'm going down a hill and let off the gas, the car sort of jerks. I can hear it and see the rpm gauge going up and down slightly. It only happens ocassionaly but it's really annoying. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Sounds to me like it is only engine braking. Next time that it happens, try putting the car in neutral, and letting it coast. It may be you have worn motor mounts (probably dogbone), and the extra strain from the engine braking is making it hop around.

How many miles are on the current motor mounts?

It's a rebuilt 2.8 with a little over 800 miles on it. I'm not sure if the mounts were replaced too or not(I'm not too swift when it comes to cars). I'll have to ask the mechanic who put it in.

I think that that would be the best place to start right now. I would assume that whoever replaced the engine also re did all the engine and tranny mounts, at least they probably should have.

This may sound silly but how much gas (gage) did you have at the time? If the car is near empty, going downhill will pull all the gas away (to front of tank) from the pump & it may starve. If it does it with any level of gas just ignore this post.

Had that happen when the clutch got contaminated with a little oil from leak. A non Fiero car. Clutch replacement time.

If the RPM goes up and down slightly and kinda surges, it could possibly be a torque converter lock-up solenoid problem. It will also do it cruising on a flat road in high gear with minimal load on the engine, but it is felt mostly going downhill. Another symptom is that it may try to push you through a stop, and the engine will sometimes stall. An easy way to check it is to unplug the four pin connector from the trans and see if the problem goes away.
