How do I tell what the model year of the computer is? There is a sticker on it with a bunch of numbers which I assume has the year encoded in it. I don't have a scanner to hook up. Here is the code... thanx.

Serv. No. 1227170 APN
860022 M611641731

Thanks for the link. Its just what I am looking for. I found out that the ECM is an 86-87 5-spd manual V6 ECM (which is certain the wrong year for my 88 Formula) with the 88 ATX PROM chip in it (which is the correct Prom). After investigating the cave about ECM's and PROM's, it is leading me to believe that the problems I have been having may be due to this combination. This may be the reason my Fiero does not run exactly right, never has, and that nobody can figure out why. Is this a plausable assumption? Or should it work ok?

86-88 are the same ECM. 1227170. Frankly, I think something else is wrong unless you are mixing auto and manaul transmission chips or you mod'd the engine.

You didn't give any real details as to what is happening.

Terryk is correct. As I recallall the V-6 computers are interchangeable, only the proms have been changed to protect the outrageous! Proms must be compatable for the transmission application.

Sorry about the details, but I was really just looking for a way to check on the compatability of my comp. The engine in the car was changed prior to my purchasing it with an 86 motor. The tranny is the original 88 tranny. The problems its having are rough idle, stalling and the trans seems to have trouble shifting from 1-2, but doesn't seem to be slipping. Thats a quick description of course. I was thinking if the comp was incorrect for the tranny, it may the cause. I've taken the car to a number of places and nobody can figure it out. Mechanically all seems good to them. So I figured I'd try to figure out if there is some electrical incompatability somewhere. The PROM is correct, so then the comp. must be ok. Another possibility is the incompatability of the flywheel and flexplate with the earlier engine. Since 88 engines were internally balanced, there may be something wrong here. However, it does have the correct flywheel on it. This is becoming a 4 year mystery now! Its just getting a little tiring. Thanks for the help!
