Just bought an 86SE, it needs a new steering column among other things. How hard is it to replace one? Tilt is bad and it will turn over without a key. TIA

Getting the column off is fairly easy. Once you have removed the lower trim, all that's left is to remove the pinch bolt at the bottom of the shaft, remove the 4 bolts holding the column to the dash, and unhook the electrical plugs. You might have to wedge a screwdriver into the slot in the coupling at the bottom of the shaft, but it should pull off without too much trouble.

There are notes in my cave. those should help. The Ogre's Fiero Cave If you have an automatic make sure you read that article. It explains the transmission interlock cable.

There is a bolt in the universal joint under the dash that must be removed. The joint will not come off unless the bolt is out.

There is a large bracket bolted to the column. unbolt the top of that bracket from the dash.

depends what else you need to do. If you have to move the steering wheel or other items the dificulty goes up.
