Started happening yesterday. I can hear the brakes creak anytime there is a change in pressure on the brake pedal, and can also feel the creaking in the floor of the car. Fiero is an '88 Formula, I replaced the front pads, calipers(rebuilt from FS) and master-cylinder several months back to stop this problem. It resurfaced yesterday, and is terrible today. I would replace the rotors too, but they are rusted solid to the spindle assembly.
What is causing this, and what can I do. '88 brake components are expensive.

Still have no idea why my brakes are creeking. I can feel the creaking in the floor, in the brake pedal, and it is very loud. Not a squealing or whining, but creaking.
I seem to have lost the wheel lock key so I can't get the wheels off to take a look(been looking for two hours). I used loctite when I installed the calipers, the pads are pretty new, I'm outta' ideas.

I have had a creak in my front brake assemblies on my 88 Formula ever since I got it. They operate flawlessly, so I know its not a potential mechanical failure. My best guess is that the noise comes from the two rods that hold the pads in the calipers. When the brakes are applied, the pads move inward along these two rods. Being a metal to metal contact, they make noise. It is kind of annoying, but if its what I am experiencing I don't think there is any major problem there. Maybe some grease on them may clear it up, but I haven't tried doing that yet.

This is almost always a sign of improper installation lube. There are usually more things to grease than the slides.

disassemble clean and regrease the parts properly. Check the slides and any other bracket parts that touch or are very close to the caliper and or the pads. (I don't know the 88 layout off top of my head.) There are likely places you missed greasing or the grease has been washed off.

Look for areas of bracket or caliper that touch the edges of the pad backing plate. Clean and grease those surfaces. (Go lightly. you don't want the grease getting on the pads.)

When you hit the brakes the pads shift against the bracket and or caliper. The caliper may also shift against stops on the bracket. All these contact points must be clean and greased.

Also check lug nut torque.

Just a shot in the dark, here, Drew - but could it be your caliper sleeves (what I call 'sliders')? Fiero Store sells them (part #56053).

My old calipers creaked, my new ones don't. I tried lubing the pins on the old calipers, but that didn't work. When I replaced them, I noticed a lot of corrosion on the inside of these 'sliders.' I wouldn't think your new front calipers would be creaking yet - but maybe your back ones are?

Most likely the creaking (sp) is coming from the rods the pads slide on. I think they are actually called springs, even though they don't look like springs to me. The creaking is from the pads binding on the rods which are likely bent and will have to be replaced. My 88 does the same thing, and I am getting set to do the brakes all around

This thread comes up every now and then. I only have experience with the 88 cars, so I can't comment on the others.

The noise is coming from the sliders. They need to be cleaned and lubed. I've tried them all, and believe it or not, the best results are with simple silicone vacuum grease (also called stop-**** grease). This is the stuff that looks like Petroleum Jelly - milky clear color. Some auto parts stores carry it, but you have to look carefully, or find someone who knows something. All the "high pressure" and "high temperature" greases I've used have all hardened and the noise came back.

I really don't think it's the sliders themselves. I think it's the rubber boot chattering on the sliders. If you take it apart, you will see that the boot forms an o-ring seal on the slider. I think that it sticks, then moves, then sticks again, causing this noise. If you are going to work on these things, you can do us all a favor and perform a simple experiment.

Remove the calipers and pull the sliders out. Reassemble the silders WITHOUT the boots. Bolt them on the car and go for a ride to see if the noise is gone. Then, put them back together (don't want to travel far without protection) and see if the noise comes back. If it does, then you have found the problem. And if this is the real problem, then "putting in more grease" isn't the answer. We might have to look into a different material, or teflon coating or something like that.

Good luck,
