OK, guys After reading that later 86's actually came with a getrag, went right to the car to see what month my 86 fiero was made in. Surprise !!! Doorsticker is gone Would the Stickers under hood be of any help identityfing what the tranny is. Or is it as easy as poping the Decklid open, and looking at it to find out what is in there. If that's the case, sure could use a Pic of either.
Dying to find out, wether I got my X-mas present early

An easy way to tell is early 86s V6 engines came with Saginaw 4 speed manual transmissions. 86.5 (those made after June) came with 5 speed Getrag transmissions. So if your car is a four speed manual it has a Saginaw, if it has a five speed manual it is a getrag. If it has neither it is an automatic T125 transmission.
If your car is a 4 clyinder with a manual 5 speed transmission it is an Izusu, If it doesn't have a 5 speed manual it is an automatic transmission, T125.
Hmmm... Please correct me if I am wrong, but... the EASIEST way to tell is look at the final drive unit (where the axle shafts go in). If it's a 5-speed and it has a little dipstick on the rear-most part of the housing, then it's a Getrag. If not, then it's the Isuzu. With all the engine/tranny swaps these days it's hard to tell what might be stuffed in there.
You can also look at the sticker inside the front "hood" on the left wheel housing. There are letter/number combinations in groups of three. The codes are as follows:
It's critical that you know what transmission you've got! For example, if the trans. gives you trouble and it's a Muncie-Getrag, you've got to gripe at it in German or "Hoosier," otherwise your comments will have no effect. Likewise, if it's an Isuzu, you must comprain in Japanese.

Thank a lot for all your help guys. Yes,it's a 5 speed, and yes to 4 cylinder. Jury is still out what is actually in it, on my way to find out right now. I hope you're right PlasticWrapd,I printed your Codes as well. Very handy to have
BTW Now I know why my Muncie bit the dust. I'am german, and drove it like a german.
If it's a 4-cyl. then the odds are good you have he stock Isuzu 5-sp. Fiero Getrag 5-sp. trannies are tough to find and if yours was ever replaced then it would likely have been replaced with another Isuzu 5-sp.
Standard,
I owned an '86 V-6 SE with a 5 sp. Getrag, so they exist. It makes sense that late SE's got them if late GT's did.....why wouldn't they?
