Ok, guys. I need your opinions. I just bought a GT that has noisy lifters. I knew this before I bought her but went ahead and got it anyway (has good oil pressure and runs pretty strong for 103k miles) I've been searching archives for info on adjusting lifters, but haven't found much help. I know the process for doing the adjustment on the valves but I'm not sure if this is actually the problem. Are the 2.8s known for any unusual valve train wear, like soft cams or press-in-studs that come loose. If I'm going to go to the trouble of pulling the plenum I want to make sure and fix this problem correctly before it gets put back together. I'm used to being able to pull valve covers while the car is running to make valve adjustments by ear. (V8s)

Are you sure it is lifter noise? I thought my lifters were clicking but it turned out to be a leaky exhaust manifold.

Take care,

Carroll

The car has shiny new exhaust manifolds on it, thanks to the previous owner.

The 2.8L are not know for inherent valve train problems.

Are you sure it's not the injectors clicking that you hear?

Might be sticking lifters or leaking lifters but the mileage certainly doesn't support that.

Remove the valve covers and see if any or loose. All are preloaded with 1-1/2 turns, so none should be loose.

Hey Terry, I wish it was the injectors clicking, but no, it's definitley lifter noise. I thought it might be sticky or leaking lifters too. The car had set for almost two years before I got it. The guy I bought it from ran some berrymans(sp?) through it right before I got it and he said it quieted it down by almost half of what it was. I ran some JB through it when I got it home but didn't seem to make any difference. Oh well, looks like I'll be tearing into it this weekend to see whats up. Thanks for the responses guys. I'll let you know what I found.
