can any of you fiero gods out there tell what might be the possible cause for a code 14????? my haynes book says it is a coolant sensor (which one i don't know, there is 3 right?) i read somewhere else that it was a overheat condition, but my car is running fine temp wise, at least i think?? i am planning on going to the farm swap meet in two weeks but know i am getting scared to drive it there!! my check engine light has lite up on two different ocassions with no lights in between drives. any thoughts

Code 14 is Coolant Temp Sensor low. It is the sensor in intake manifold on the right side as viewed from the rear of the car.

There are two wires to it (yellow and black). Your yellow wire could be shorted to ground or the sensor could be shorted internally.

This is the sensor that goes to the ECM. If it's shorted, it will make the ECM think the coolant is above 275F. It take 3 seconds to set the code. You can disconnect the sensor and see of a Code 15 sets. This is CTS high. If it does, then the wiring is good and the problem is the sensor. If not, then check the wires for being burn through to each other or ground.

The gauge uses a different sender that is located on the left side of the rear head.

and I agree with terryk, mine was cracked on the connector and it allowed water to get into it and the resulting corrosion shorted it - changed it and the light has never come on again (darn I miss that night light!) -- I drove across country that way too (once I determined that it wasn't an actual coolant problem but rather the sensor was making the ECM think there was a problem......unless there is something wrong besides the sensor you aren't doing any damage - but - you need to change the sensor.

You can get a sensor at most large auto parts stores too - mine came from Napa........

I had to replace mine also, on my 84 fiero.
Mine had the orignal plug. The new one that GM gave me has a different plug and i had to cut the old one off and solder in the new plug. I think pepboys and trak might give you small crimps to do it without soldering, be careful not to lose it.

Get the sensor from BorgWarner. Those come with the needed plug and uninsulated crimps.

NOTE: This sensors wires MUST be soldered to the harness. Even a few OHM error in this sensor can be a problem. The BorgWarner package says solder it even if you use the crimps in the package.
