Ok, I notice both of my rear axles seals were leaking oil on the ground. Don't ask how, but I ended up buying one GM replacement seal and one from Advance Auto parts. A few days ago I pulled both axles and replaced them both with no problems. Apparently the previous ones failed because there were some dings in them. Anyhow, a few days later the ONE of the seals is leaking again. This time it's just the driver side seal which happens to be the one from Advanced Auto Parts. Hmmmm.... Anybody had bad luck with aftermarket axle seals? When installing them both, I used a socket that perfectly matched the outside of the seal, so I know that they were installed properly. Just wanted to see if anyone had any input before I replace the seal AGAIN with an AC Delco one. TIA...

GT, if you are talking about the seals that are tapped into the transaxle, yes I have had the problem as well.

I replaced both of mine and it still leaked. Pulled it apart and realized that I missed the fact that the prior mechanics scored the transaxle shaft mount area where the seals tap in.

What I did to resolve the leaking problem was this: take some hi temp RTV, and place a tiny bead on the outer edge of the inside lip of the seal seat, and the outside lip of the transaxle.

Note:
Be careful not to place to much RTV on the seat, you do not want the RTV in the trans fluid.

Once I did the RTV work, I let the car sit about 1 1/2 hours before I added fluid and then let it sit over night before I drove it again. The fluid has not leaked since then and it has been about a month.

Forgot to add that I purchased my seals from Auto Zone.

It's real easy to damage the tranny case changing seals. Been there, done that.

if it's the tranny case that's the problem I usually use one of the paint on sealers. Permatex Super 300 or High Tack, or Balkamp Aviation sealer. (Not Indian Head!) These won't leave boogers in the tranny like RTV.

If it's a deep scratch you may have to use RTV. Like he said above use as little as needed to do the job.

I scored the tranny case when i removed the seals with one of the hook shaped seal pullers. I used the RTV method and it worked great.

However I did over fill my Muncie 4spd a bit and it blew oil out of the breather until the level got right. That made a mess that at first looked like a leaky seal.

Hope this helps,

Carroll

I just replaced a weeping seal in my GT~~~~~~ i got one from the dealer and decided on the way home to get one from napa,(in case I wrecked the first one) I figured hey!! I would use the three dollar one from Napa and return the dealer one!
BUt I took a close look at the two!!
NO what? the AC delco parts rubber sealing area was visualy smaller in diameter! I mean you could see it was smaller and going to seal better then the one from Napa! I installed the Delco one and it's as dry as a bone! btw The clutch was just replaced 800 miles ago and new Napa axel seals were installed at that time! The other one gets changed this week too! I did mention this to my Pontiac dealer parts manager today and he just looked at me and smiled!
I did the same and paid the extra $4.00 for the Delco seal! Just an observation here folks!
I buy the right parts For my car.
PS I made a really neat seal installing tool from a PVC collar and a screw in nut type end! it worked great! two wacks and it was home!
if you need pic's I'll send it cost $1.69

If none of these other ideas work The fiero Store sells a specially machined bearing and seal combination thats suppossed to support the axle and keep it from distorting the seal over time from internal trans wear letting the axle move around relative to the case. Its pretty expensive though.
