I am under the assumption that it's the 5spd that comes with some, or every 87-88Gt. Please don't think I'm naive, but I've never heard that term before comming to this club. Please fill me in on the durability advantages, or any other advantages, thanks, Ed.
Ed, you are soooo naive! Just joking. Yes, it's the 5 speed tranny that was used with V6 Fieros beginning in 1986-1/2. Prior to that, the manual tranny used with the 2.8 was the Muncie 4 speed. The other 5 Speed tranny used with the 2.5 four cylinders is an Isuzu (I think) and was deemed not strong enough for the V6. Actually, the Getrag name cames from the German company that helped Muncie design that tranny.
Oh yeah, almost forgot the other part of your question. Supposedly, the Getrag is much stronger than the other 5 speed tranny, therefore more desireable. Also, harder to find and more expensive.

Yes, the Muncie-Getrag (also known as the 282) is the newer tranny, still in use as the 284, attached to the Quad 4 in the Cavaliers, Sunfires, and others. It did, indeed, supplant the Isuzu transaxle because of the power of the V6 over the Duke.
The other big failing of the Isuzu, from my experience, was the mounting for the slave cylinder. The bracket was, evidently, not as strong as the integral mounting on the 282. It was much easier to blow clutches....

Ed, yes unless it's been replaced by an Isuzu by a previous owner. Crazy, several of the high performance front wheel drive cars had a version of the Getrag too, like the Beretta GT, but they will not fit the Fiero unless you buy Rodney Dickman's conversion kit.

Ed, The 22P book list all 4speed/5speed trannys as Getrag designed,Muncie built transmissions used in the Fiero. They are as follows:1984-My8,M19(4/sp);1985-86-My8,M17(4 sp);1986-88-MG2(5 sp).
The 1985-88-MT2 Isuzu 5sp was used in all of the 4cylinders coupes.
So technically you have a Muncie trans.

These last posts clear it up, as the book refers to it as a Muncie, not a getrag. Thanks to everyone for the clarification, now I have a new word / acronym (?) that I can throw around! Thanks guys.
