Batboy, back to your Autometer gauges. What wires did you have to hookup to the Speedo and the Tech? Did you have to use Autometer's VSS? The reason why I ask is because I think I will go that way with my Gauges. My Speedo had not worked for ahile now. It points in differant directions every time I start driving the car. One time it might be pointed to the ten o'clock position and the next time I drive the car it would go to the 4 o'clock position. It might be a ground or something. I can't find it, So I'm just going to put new gauges in its place.
Thanks, Felix

I used the Fiero speed sensor. It could be a bad wire or ground, the sensor, or the speedo itself. Good luck, this mod is not for the faint of heart (kind of expensive too). I about gave up on the project a couple of times. I actually jotted down some quick notes about the wiring, which is unusually for me to document anything I do. caution, 84 Fieros might be slightly different.

On the speedo connector under the dash (connector letter--wire color--function):

P--black/white stripe--ground
R--purple/white--speedo
S--yellow--speed sensor to speedo
T--yellow/black--12v switched
U--brown--cruise control

Oh guano, I can't find the other piece of paper that lists the other two connectors found in the back of the instrument panel. Sorry. Warning, this mod was very time consuming and required lots of time. I did it long enough ago where I've forgotten all the little details, but you'll have to cut two round holes in the plastic face cover. The instrument cluster has to be assembled as a unit before you put it back in and I had to literally force it back into it's place in the dash. You usually leave the front trim panel off and put that back on after the cluster is in place, but you can't do it that way with it all together like the way I did.

Thanks Batboy, I know now that I have a ground problem some where. I checked the black/white wire while it was pluged into the speedo and I had power to it. I'm sure the ground wire is not suppose to have power. But when I unplug the connecter from the speedo(with the key on) there is no power there. I traced the wire all the way back to the engine compartment where it is grounded and there weren't any breaks in the wire. I'm puzzled! the car is a 84 se... Anyone else with any ideas that I can try? Thanks

Just run another ground wire. On the C2 connector which plugs into the rear of the instrument cluster on the left side (speedo side), look for a black wire going into terminal 4, that's another ground. Splice into that and run a short wire to the speedo connector. Disconnect the ground at the speedo plug and inspect the connector to make sure it's not damaged or shorting inside the plastic. Then connect the short jumper ground wire into it instead. That's what I'd do.

Did you check to see if you had 12v at the yellow/black wire? Maybe somebody reversed them. I've heard that some of the 84 wires might be color coded different, at least when you're trying to install ralley gauges, one or two wires are different.

Hi Batboy, I did what you said about jumping a ground wire from the c2 to c1 connector. Will it did get read of the live ground, but it did not fix my speedo. I took her for a spend and the needle slowly rose all the way around to the 6 o'clock position. Now what, any ideas. Sorry to bug you... Felix

Well, since I had an extra Fiero sitting around when I was working on my speedo, I swapped speed sensors out, because I knew the one in my dead 87 was good, then I swapped speedos. In my case, it turned out to be a bad wire from the sensor to the speedo that was causing my problem.
