I've been working on a '96 3.4 DOHC w/4T60E swap in my sparse spare time. I finally put the hardware on the cradle last week. The axle alignement for the 4spd looks like it is off. The motor mount needs to be moved fwd about 3/8", but I think the whole assembly needs to move fwd to align axle & hubs. Comments, suggestions and old war stories are welcome.

Hi. I have an 86 GT with a 4 spd auto. I didnt put it in. I purchased the car with it along with twin turbos. But its a custom job and I know nothing about it yet. Just wanted to let you know that it obviously can be done, but I dont know how, or with how much difficulty.

Sorry, Its not a 5 spd. only 4, my bad, It has an overdrive though.

Awright Sean, I was buying the twin turbos, but 5 speed auto? I call bullcrap! Seriously, what FWD GM (or any manufacturer for that matter) makes a 5 speed automatic?

OK, I forgive ya, go and sin no more. I'm still dyin of curiousity about that twin turbo deal. Sounds like you've got a wickdly modded ride. Pics, we must have pics!

4T60E's are longer on the passenger side and need a short axle.

If you need a shorter axle try an axle and driveshaft shop. They will have a listing of all the stock axles and their lenghts. There may be a standard axle that will work. There are many axle lenghts used in different GM cars thru the years. They are all mostly the same. Just the Tri pots change. The axle itself is the same except for lenght.

I think I have the axles figured out:
use the tri-pot(s) from monte carlo
use the left axle shaft from the fiero
use the right axle shaft from the mc
use the outer axle/race from the fiero

the question i have is the axle alignment
fore & aft. It looks like the whole trans & engine need to move forward. right now the assembly is cockeyed with the motor mount needing to move fwd about 3/8". I presume to align the axles I need to double the motor mount move, and move both fornt/rear trans mounts 3/8". My reasoning is that the motor mount was correct with the TMH125 but now is off by 3/8".

I think I figured out the problem. I used production mount brackets for a 4spd. The '87 cradle has 2 sets of holes for the front trans mount and I originally used the narrow (wrong) set. I did this because the trans sidecover would touch the cradle. The problem is that I intentionally purchased the PB version of the 4T60E. That is the only auto offered in '96 with the Z34. It is geared slightly lower and the case was ruggedized (muw). The side cover is cast aluminum instead of stamped steel and therefore is about 3/8" (or more) wider. This caused interference with cradle creating a pivot point. SOLUTION: modify the cover or the craddle or both to eliminate the interference.

I resurrected this thread since I'm in the middle of a second swap.

I just sat the 4T60E and 92 3800SC on the cradle. I used the Fiero mounts and A car trans brackets. The trans side cover (stamped steel, not the cast type). It's just about touching the cradle on the driver's side. I think it will clear if I move the whole engine/trans to the passenger side. The slots in the cradles should be enough. On the rear mount, I used the holes closet to the drivers side. There are two pairs of holes there.

The crank side has the expected problem using the A car crank mount. It is to far to the front. Unless an N or other A car has an offset mount, it looks like I will have to extend the cradle plate where the mount will sit towards the front.

87GTZ34, did you use the outside most holes for the rear trans mount on the cradle?

Terry
