Well the 4 speed in 85 GT seems to have decided it doesn't want to shift into any of the gears in the front part of the shift pattern. This would be the gears reverse, 1st and 4th. I've narrowed the problem down to the shifter cable which will pull okay when the lever is pulled back to shift into 2nd and 4th, but doesn't "push" to shift into the other gears. The cable just seems to bend.
I can shift the transmission fine manually from within the engine compartment. My question is, is the cable stretched so that I need to replace it ? It doesn't seem to be broken as I can still shift into 2nd and 4th.
Or is there something else I'm missing here ? It's way too far out to be fixed by a simple adjustment at the tranny.

The bracket on the trans where the cables pass thru could be broken. This is a common problem on the 4spd. The other thing is check the cables at the shifter and see if they are binding there also.

GT,

It sounds as if the SELECT cable is O.K., but the SHIFT cable is moved to one end. Have you tried adjusting the cable at the trans lever?

Later,
Vader

Yeah I tried to tighten the cable up at the trans but there's nowhere near enough adjustment available there to take up the over an inch and half that would be needed to tighten it up. I'm thinking maybe there's an internal part of the cable that's broken which is why it's not stiff enough to push the gear selector on the tranny any more. Course I'm just guessing here as I can't see how a cable can push anything. But there doesn't seem to be any other way these gears are selected.

Let me know when you find out exactly what it is. I have been having some shifter problems also and I think it may be the cable

I had the same problems on my 88' Formula. Turned out that I just need to use some white lithium grease on my shifter cable and linkage. It was rusty.

Were you able to move both cables freely when you had checked the tranny? They both should have no resistance.
