Hi guys, I think I finally figured out what the heck is making the annoying ticking/scratching noise in my GT. It seems to be coming from my speedometer. WHen I'm doing exactly 20 kph or 50 kph the noise happens. I've never had my dash apart before, and am wondering how difficult it would be to take it apart and lubricate the cable. Also, what should I use for a lubricant? thanks in advance for the help

You can't lubricate the speedometer cable at all because it doesn't exist! All of our Fieros use an electronic speedometer that reads a signal from a pulse generator on the transaxle. The only thing in the instrument panel that rotates are the two stepper motors that run the odometer and trip odometer. They don't turn continously but move in small steps to turn the odometer drums. I think the pulse generator produces 2,000 pulses per mile.

Loafer, It may be the trip odometer you're hearing. Mine will ocasionally reset incorrectly and there will be a ticking and the last digit jumps. When you hear the ticking, push the reset a few times and it may go away.
You can also lay your finger lightly against the reset button and feel it if it is the problem.

Thanks for the info you guys. Its not the trip odometer, I know what that sounds like. My problem is a scratchy sound that only hapeens when you are a certain speed, (50 kph or 20 kph). It doesn't matter if you're on perfectly smooth roads or bumpy ones, it still does the noise. Any other ideas as to what the problem might be?

Don't know what the cause is, but here's the cure:

In 20kph zones, drive 19kph, in 50kph zones, drive 51kph...

If you remove lower cover of IP and unplug speedometer connector from the bottom LHS of cluster, it will disable the speedometer. Drive around that way and see if that eliminates the problem.

Gage cluster removal is easy, after you have done it once or twice.
