How hard of a job is it to switch auto trans to 5-speed getrag into my 86 SE with v-6 auto? Can I use any parts off of an 84se with 4cylnder 4-speed muncie?

Yes you can, and it would actually be best to do it with a parts car that's already manual. Remember, you'll need the chip from a manual car also.
I'm in the process of doing this in my '87 GT. After the motor is back together, it's getting an '86 GT tranny. SCCA Fiero and Coyote have actually completed this swap. You may want to ask them....

You could probably use the pedals and shaft and possibly some parts from the shifter and console (shifter cover) if it's in good shape since it's hard to find it that way. I'm not sure if you could use the shifter from a 4sp but I doubt it.

By the way, the so-called Getrag 5sp is actually a Muncie 282. Getrag never made a trans for the Fiero, rather Muncie manufactured it using a Getrag design but people (and even some manuals) commonly refer to it as the Getrag, perhaps to avoid any confusion between the 4 & 5 speeds but more likely out of some inate believe that Getrag makes a better trans (not always true). This erroneous labeling could lead to problems when looking for parts because Getrag did make a trans labeled 282 but it was for another car (non-GM) and it was longitudinal. This info came from someone on another list who was looking for parts for the Getrag 284 used with the 3.4 DOHC V6 which was a Getrag, so he called Getrag directly. However, by an agreement with GM they do not make any replacement parts (GM used to sell parts but no cases-they want to sell the whole trans). Therefore, he also asked about the Getrag 282 from the Fiero since 3.4 owners often use it for a replacement when their 284 goes south (a common occurance-the trans is too weak for the engine). They had never heard of the trans and thought he might be talking about the 282 they did make although they assured him that it wasn't for a GM car. However, GM does still make parts for this trans so as long as one deals with GM and not Getrag there will not be a problem.
